How to choose

Choosing the right fence for your property

Start with the purpose

What is the fence for? Privacy from a neighbor, keeping a dog in, keeping deer out of a garden, meeting pool code, marking a property line, or making the front of the house look finished. The answer narrows the material list fast.

A dog run does not need to be a privacy fence. A pool enclosure has rules a privacy fence does not. A front yard fence is mostly about how it looks from the street.

Consider the terrain

Slope decides more than people expect. Aluminum racks and follows a grade smoothly. Wood can be built to follow the ground or to step down it. Vinyl panels are rigid and generally step. Chain link handles grade about as well as anything.

If your yard has a real hill in it, mention that on the first call.

Consider ongoing maintenance

Wood is the best looking material on day one and the one that asks something of you later; staining every few years is what keeps it looking the way it did. Vinyl and aluminum ask for nothing. Chain link asks for nothing and does not pretend to be anything else.

Both are sound choices. The right one depends on how much ongoing upkeep you prefer to take on.

Establish a budget

Chain link is the least expensive per foot, then treated pine, then cedar and vinyl, with ornamental aluminum usually at the top depending on style and height.

Share the budget you have in mind. It helps us recommend the material and configuration that gives you the most value for the investment.
